Pop-ups urged to apply to rent public spaces

Pop-up businesses have a week left to apply to rent space in public areas across Cornwall.

Cornwall Council is accepting proposals at 12 sites which can be used for various types of trade but must be kept clear overnight.

They are in car parks and public areas near beaches, footpaths and moorland from Bodmin to Newlyn.

The closing date for applications is 22 January.

'Open to new ideas'

The council first started renting out under-utilised sites in 2016.

It said while the majority of the businesses so far had been food trucks or converted horseboxes, it was "open to new ideas".

The available sites are:

  • Commercial Road, Hayle
  • Fairground, Helston
  • Grogley Halt, Bodmin
  • Gyllingvase Coach park, Falmouth
  • Hurlers and Minions Car Park, Minions
  • Jubilee Green/The Waterside, Saltash
  • Kit Hill, Callington
  • Link Road, Padstow
  • Main Car Park, Fowey
  • Newlyn Green, Newlyn
  • Penhalt Cliff, Poundstock
  • Scarlets Well, Bodmin

Councillor Carol Mould, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods, said some of the previous pop-ups had been "really successful".

She added: "We have more sites being added each year and existing sites coming up for renewal so I would encourage anyone who is thinking of trying something new to look into it properly and see if this could be an opportunity for them."
