Police have safely removed an improvised explosive device from a house in south Armagh.

The device, and other items, were seized from the property on the Tassagh Road, Keady by police, assisted by the Army, for further forensic examination.

Officers carried out the search to assist an ongoing investigation by the gardaí (Irish police).

On Sunday, gardaí arrested a man in his 40s in County Monaghan and he was released without charge on Tuesday.

They said it followed the discovery of improvised explosive devices in the north-east and south-west of the Republic of Ireland.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it was investigating a potential link between the Tassagh Road search and a security alert in Ballyards Road in Milford in County Armagh on 1 July.

Police said anyone with information should get in touch with them.

William Irwin, a Democratic Unionist Party assembly member for Newry and Armagh, said the removal of the device in Keady was a "welcome development" but its discovery was worrying for the local area.

"We thought we had put that behind us," he added.

Irwin praised the police and gardaí for finding the devices and urged the public to provide any information they have to the authorities to ensure "those responsible are brought to justice".
