Arrest after man runs at police armed with machete

A man in his 30s has been arrested after an individual ran at police while wielding a machete in Garvagh, County Londonderry.

Officers were deployed following reports of a man with the weapon in the Bridge Street area at 19:00 BST on Sunday.

The police said the suspect unsheathed the weapon and ran towards them before they disarmed and arrested him.

The man was arrested on suspicion of having an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He remains in police custody on Monday morning.
