Man dies in A64 crash after police stop attempt
A man has died when his car struck a tree after police had attempted to pull him over.
The driver's Vauxhall Corsa left the A64 near Crambeck in North Yorkshire at around 03:30 GMT on Wednesday.
The man who died was aged in his 50s and the sole occupant of the vehicle.
North Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers had tried to stop the car a short time before the collision and that it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because of prior contact during the incident.
The force added: "The man's family have been made aware.
"The A64 currently remains closed in both directions to allow for collision investigation work to take place and this closure is expected to remain in place until rush hour today.
"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference 12250012775."
