A major A-road in North Yorkshire has been closed in both directions after a car crashed into a tree.

Emergency services were called to the A64 Malton bypass near to Welburn at about 03:40 GMT.

The affected part of the route was where the dual carriageway turned into a single carriageway, and diversions had been put in place, North Yorkshire Police said.

The closure was put in place at about about 04:00 GMT and National Highways said the road was likely to remain closed "throughout the morning".

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Malton "responded to a report of a single-vehicle road traffic collision in which the car collided with a tree".

Firefighters helped ambulance crews and made the vehicle safe, a spokesperson said.
