Hundreds of top pool players will return to Bridlington Spa

A seaside resort will kick off a summer of events by welcoming some of the world's best pool players.

The European Blackball Pool Championships will be staged at Bridlington Spa from 5 to 16 April, with free entry for spectators.

More than 800 players are due to compete in the event, providing a "major boost" to the local economy, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

Other key events are due to include the Bridlington Kite Festival, on 17 and 18 May, and both Race the Waves and the Bridlington Steampunk Festival, from 13 to 15 June.

The kite festival, which is staged above the cliffs of Sewerby, is due to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

It will be staged on the same weekend as the Gathering of the Martial Arts World Masters. Visitors to Bridlington Spa will be able to learn various martial art styles and techniques.

The Spa will also be the venue for the annual Northern Soul Weekender, from 27 to 29 June.

Bridlington will host several other sporting events over the course of the summer:

  • The Northern European Youth Beach Volleyball Championships, from 30 June to 4 July.
  • The Beach Crossfit Throwdown on 5 and 6 July.
  • The Bridlington Beach Volleyball Open on 12 and 13 July.
  • The 50th anniversary of the British Open/Tri Nations Darts, from 19 to 21 September.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The European Blackball Pool Championships is a world-class competition.

"The team is looking forward to welcoming the organisers and players from around the world to the East Yorkshire coast."
