Tower block demolition leaves residents 'in limbo'

The elderly residents of a tower block say they have been left angry and "in limbo" by plans to demolish the building.

South Tyneside Council voted in May for Durham Court in Hebburn to be pulled down, due to repair costs and it exceeding its lifespan.

The initial decision was put to its scrutiny committee, but council bosses have made a final decision to demolish the building, with some residents accusing the Labour-led local authority of a lack of communication.

Deputy leader Jane Carter, whose responsibilities include housing, said the council had "engaged extensively with tenants throughout the process" and it would continue to offer those affected "priority access to suitable alternative accommodation."
