Roads and rail services have been affected as heavy rain fell across most of Wales and parts of England.

A mother and child had to be rescued from a trapped car by firefighters, after it became stuck in flood water at Garthmyl near Montgomery in Powys.

More than 100mm (4 inches) of rain fell in 24 hours across parts of Wales, according to the Met Office.

There have also been more than 120 flood warnings in place in Wales and across England.

In Nottinghamshire, three people were rescued by the fire and rescue service from a flooded car at Rufford Ford.

Meanwhile, residents in 25 homes were evacuated from Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, as well as from Monmouth Caravan Park, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

People were rescued by fire-fighters from seven properties at Mill Green near the River Teme in Knighton, Powys.

Where has the rail disruption been?

Rail services, including the Cambrian and Heart of Wales lines, were among those hit.

Transport for Wales (TfW) advised rail travellers to check journeys before travelling.

Flooding led to numerous line closures, including between Shrewsbury and Welshpool, Crewe and Hereford. Bus replacement services were being organised but flooding on roads meant this was not possible between Shrewsbury and Newport either.

Services were also hit between Chester and both Liverpool and Manchester.

Virgin Trains reported flooding in Staffordshire, hitting services through Stoke-on-Trent. into Sunday.

The A555 Manchester Airport relief road, which opened last year at a cost of £290m, flooded in Stockport.

Several trunk roads and minor road in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Ceredigion, Monmouthshire, Powys, Wrexham and Cheshire were shut.

In Builth Wells, Powys, the A483 was closed northbound at Broadway, with Stagecoach Wales warning it was unable to use the town's bus station.

The A469 between Ystrad Mynach and Llanbradach has been blocked in both directions by flood water, while highways officials closed the A4048 at Troedrhiw, Blaenau Gwent at about 14:00 BST.

The A40 Brecon Road was closed in both directions between Crickhowell and Abergavenny, Monmouthshire while the A488 Clun bridge in Shropshire was also shut.

Dyfed-Powys Police urged motorists only to make "urgent journeys" in flood affected areas, while temporary traffic lights were in place on the A44 at Lovesgrove, Aberystwyth, after the river burst its banks, according to Traffic Wales.

"Do not take unnecessary risks," warned Dyfed-Powys officers.
