Police appealed for information after a woman was attacked in the toilet of the Chop House Rock Bar in Southport

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in a pub toilet in a seaside town.

The attack happened in Chop House Rock Bar in Southport between 00:00 and 02:00 GMT on 27 December, Merseyside Police said.

A 44-year-old man, from Carlisle, is being questioned in police custody.

Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact the force.

Det Insp Carla Cross said the woman was being supported by specialists, adding: "We know the impact of such offences can be long-lasting on victims."

She urged anyone who was in Chop House Rock Bar on Scarisbrick Avenue or nearby in the early hours of Friday to think whether they saw "anything that in hindsight seemed suspicious" and to get in touch.
