A bomb disposal van has been seen outside what is believed to be the Home Office building on Union Street in Liverpool.

Bomb disposal experts were called out to reports of a suspicious package at a government building.

The incident happened at a Home Office site in Union Street in Liverpool earlier.

Merseyside Police said the street had been closed as a precaution.

A building has been evacuated after a suspicious package was received, police say.

Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "As a precaution, Union Street has been closed and a building has been evacuated while emergency services deal with the incident.

"Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area."
