Staff face redundancies, colleges principal says

A college group in Cornwall may have to make redundancies and other cuts due to "significant financial challenges", its leaders say.

Truro and Penwith College principal Martin Tucker said in an email to parents and carers the college was facing "financial pressures" as a result of rising costs.

He said a "strategic review of operations" was under way and this "may result in some redundancies".

Mr Tucker added he was "taking every step to manage these changes thoughtfully and responsibly".

The college group, which has 920 staff, plus sites in Carnon Downs, Penzance and Truro, had about 5,400 students in 2023, according to its website.

In the letter, Mr Tucker said: "Like many colleges across the country, we are facing financial pressures due to rising costs and funding challenges.

"To safeguard the college's future and continue providing the high-quality education our students deserve, we've informed staff today of the launch of a college-wide reorganisation programme."

He added he would "minimise any impact on the curriculum" and, where courses were affected, students and families would be contacted.
