Cash seized from drug dealers handed to youth club
Money seized from drug dealers who blighted a community has been awarded to a local youth club.
The Hive, based in Birkenhead, has received £6,000 from Merseyside Police as part of an initiative called Operation Payback.
The scheme aims to invest in local charities that support community organisations, said Insp Nicola Hughes.
Many of those who use The Hive are from communities in Wirral affected by serious and organised crime, she added.
'Safe and exciting'
"The Hive, along with our other community organisations, provides an important role in trying to give young people the best chance in life," Insp Hughes said.
"Funds awarded to The Hive will enable them to continue providing a vital service and a safe space to hundreds of vulnerable young people."
The Hive is also used as a school for children who are no longer involved in mainstream education.
It supports young people from eight to 25 years old, offering a range of activities and resources aimed at fostering personal development, social engagement and overall well-being.
The charity's CEO Jayne Wilson said the money would help ensure that the youth club remained a safe and exciting sanctuary for young people.
She said this was particularly important since a recent survey suggested 35% of young people in the north-west of England were dealing with feelings of loneliness.
"Unfortunately, far too many young individuals feel they lack a place to go or engage in meaningful activities outside of school," Ms Wilson said.
"The pressures of daily life only make this more difficult."
