Seven Jersey cancer charities supporting islanders and their families are set to benefit from the annual Lions Swimarathon.

The Lions Club and their sponsors Ravenscroft agreed the theme of the five-day event this year would be supporting people affected by cancer.

An appeal was put out to charities to benefit from the event alongside the Lions Club.

The seven charities chosen as beneficiaries are ABC Breast Cancer Support Jersey, CLIC Sargent Jersey, Friends of Jersey Oncology, Jersey Brain Tumour Charity, Jersey Cancer Relief, Macmillan Cancer Support and Jersey Hospice.

'Challenging time'

Lions Club organising committee chairman Chris Palmer said this year's theme would "resonate with so many".

"We wanted to ensure that we chose Jersey charities who are providing on the ground care and support to islanders and their families," he said.

"We were delighted with the calibre of the applications received and it was clear from all of them just how passionate they were at providing support to islanders during what will often be their most challenging time."

The charity said more than 370 teams - including schools, businesses, charities and States departments - had already confirmed their swimming times with 38 other slots awaiting confirmation.

The event is due to take place at Les Quennevais Pool from 19 to 23 March.
