Woman's death confirmed after sea search

A woman spotted in the sea off the coast of Brighton has died, police have confirmed.

HM Coastguard and Sussex Police said crews were called to the area near Brighton Palace Pier at about 03:00 BST following reports of a woman being seen in the water.

A Coastguard helicopter, rescue teams from Newhaven and Shoreham and lifeboats from Shoreham and Brighton were sent to the scene.

"A woman, in her 20s and from Lewes, was taken to hospital where she was sadly pronounced deceased," a police spokesperson said.

They added: "Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"There are no suspicious circumstances, and this will now be a matter for the coroner."

A spokesperson for Brighton Lifeboat Station said: "Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

"Thank you to everyone involved in the response."
