Woking Borough Council is asking for expressions of interest to run Moorcroft community centre in Westfield

A cash-strapped council is asking again for expressions of interest from local groups to take over a community centre.

Woking Borough Council described it as an "exciting opportunity" to run Moorcroft community centre in Westfield, which offers a "spacious hall, welcoming café area and versatile facilities".

The local authority, which effectively declared itself bankrupt in June 2023, is handing over the running of community assets as it attempts to make budget savings.

It said their transfer would allow resources to be focused on core services.

In July, the council had urged voluntary and local groups to take on community centres in St Mary's, Byfleet, and Parkview, Sheerwater, alongside Moorcroft.

"This initiative will empower local groups to transform community spaces and ensure they remain open to residents," said councillor Steve Greentree.

"We are excited to hear from organisations ready to step forward and take on this vital role."

A council spokesperson said it had launched the appeal after the withdrawal of previously interested parties.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 27 January.
