Two people have been arrested after a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run.

Christopher Deaville, 51, died after he was struck by a car on Newcastle Lane in Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent, at about 21:00 BST on Friday.

A black Mini Cooper, believed to have been involved in the collision after it was stolen, was later found abandoned and badly damaged on nearby Birks Street.

A 20-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Stoke-on-Trent, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in custody, Staffordshire Police confirmed.

The force said the car was stolen from York Road in Stafford overnight between 9 and 10 April.

On the night of the collision, the car was believed to have been travelling at speed along Newcastle Lane where the pedestrian was hit.

The driver then turned onto Penkhull New Road, right onto London Road and into the estate on Boothen Old Road, before the vehicle was left in an alleyway off Birks Street and Campbell Road, a police spokesperson said.

Anyone who might have seen the car or has more information has been urged to contact Staffordshire Police.
