A man has been arrested after the theft of a car in which two young children were sitting.

The vehicle, a Hyundai 4x4, was taken while the engine was still running on Broughton Road in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent, shortly after 10:00 BST on Saturday.

It was driven to a car dealership on Dividy Road before the thief got out and ran away, leaving the children inside, police said.

Following a search of the area, a 43-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, drug-driving and taking a child as to remove them from having lawful control.

He has since been released on conditional bail while officers' inquiries continue.
