Plans to build 484 homes on the edge of a Nottinghamshire town have been approved.

Bellway Homes intends to build the properties on a site next to the A6117 Adamsway to the south of Mansfield.

The project is the second phase of the £250 million Berry Hill sustainable urban extension, which will provide about 1,700 homes when complete.

Councillors sitting on Mansfield District Council's planning committee voted unanimously to approve the application at a meeting on Monday.

Affordable properties

Outline planning permission for the scheme, which includes plans for a school and health centre, was granted in 2013.

The first phase of construction began in 2017 and some 500 homes have already been built.

Amy Gilliver, Bellway's senior planning manager, told the meeting 170 of the newly-approved homes would be affordable properties, available either as social rented accommodation or low-cost homes.

Nottinghamshire County Council had raised concerns that there were not enough parking spaces for the development, which could lead to overspill parking nearby.

Ms Gilliver said: "Throughout the consultation process with county highways it has been acknowledged that there is the possibility of minimal overspill parking in certain scenarios.

"But it's important to note such situations would require all residents to be at home simultaneously with visitors also present at the same time - a highly unlikely occurrence."
