A dog has died after falling from a cliff.

Coastguard teams from Bridlington and Filey were called out to reports a dog had gone over a cliff edge near Sewerby Cricket Club in East Yorkshire on Saturday.

The dog was found approximately 15ft (4.5m) down on a "precarious ledge that was crumbling" and despite attempts to rescue the animal, it fell and died.

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team (BCRT) said it was the third incident this year involving dogs that have not survived and described it as a "heartbreaking outcome".

"This is a heartbreaking outcome for both the owners and the team, who always strive for a positive resolution, but unfortunately, this was not possible this time," a statement said.

"It serves as an important reminder to always keep dogs on a lead, especially near cliff edges, when walking along the coast."

BCRT said a technical rope was quickly constructed, but just before a member of the rescue team could go down the cliff, the dog moved and was soon out of sight.

The statement added: "The technician proceeded to the ledge and continued down the steep chalk cliffs, only to discover that the dog had succumbed to the injuries sustained in the fall and was found deceased at the bottom."
