Memorials to killed officers were defaced with black paint at the weekend

A man has denied vandalising memorials to two murdered police officers in Leeds.

Black paint was sprayed on the stone memorials to PC Ian Broadhurst, who was shot and killed on Dib Lane in 2003 and to Sgt John Speed, who died in a shooting in the city centre in 1984.

Jonathan Enoch, 58, of Maple Croft in Moortown, denied two counts of criminal damage when he appeared before Leeds magistrates.

He was released on conditional bail and a trial date was set for 18 June at Leeds Crown Court.

The memorial to PC Broadhurst was damaged on Saturday and Sgt Speed's memorial was targeted on Sunday.

Mr Enoch had initially been charged with two counts of intentionally causing a public nuisance but the court was told that had changed to causing criminal damage.
