A section of road in Jersey will "remain closed until further notice" after a burst water main created a sinkhole.

Rouge Bouillon between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road in St Helier will only reopen when "safe to do so", the Infrastructure and Environment (I&E) Department said.

The sinkhole appeared on 18 December when Jersey Water said it repaired the burst water main.

I&E said it was continuing to liaise with nearby property owners and their insurers to seek a resolution.

It said: "Diversions remain in place and pedestrian and residential access has been established to the lower parts of La Pouquelaye.

"Clarendon Road remains open southbound towards town."

It added schools in the area would open as normal on Monday but parents were advised to check Parentmail for further updates.

"We would like to reassure parents that school buildings have not been affected," it added.

The sinkhole caused cracks to appear in the walls of the building on the corner of Clarendon Road, and Rouge Bouillon, at the bottom of La Pouquelaye.

I&E said the building was considered unsafe due to a risk of collapse.

"The affected building in the area has been vacated and continues to be monitored closely by building surveyors," it added.
