New guidance aims for 'future-fit' retail sector

New guidance and opportunities for Jersey's retail sector which aim to revitalise the island's town centre have been published by the government.

The new strategic goals in the report released on Monday include turning St Helier into a "bustling retail and cultural hub", as well as reducing reliance on imports to the island.

Sustainable Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said the retail sector was integral to Jersey's economy and prosperity.

He added the government and businesses needed to "reimagine how people shop" to make the retail sector "future-fit".

Morel said: "As we come to the end of the year's most important retail season, I'm pleased that the government is working with the industry to make it future-fit.

"To do that in a changing retail landscape, we all need to reimagine how people shop.

"Success in transforming Jersey's retail sector is not just about increasing shop numbers or providing financial support, it is about building on our already vibrant, community-focused environment while enhancing our quality of life and strengthening our economy."

The report said public spaces should be enhanced, and the sector should collaborate with arts and heritage sectors, as well as supporting the night-time economy.
