A village has seen drivers in fancy dress and homemade karts in all shapes and sizes race down a steep hill for the first time in six years.

Burghfield near Reading once again hosted its Box Kart Bash on Sunday, a charity event that last ran in 2019, before Covid.

More than 4,000 spectators lined the route and the organiser, Ian Morrin, said: "We were pretty determined this year to do it."

The karts can reach about 30mph (48kmh) but nobody was hurt in the event, which saw Mongol Missile 2 beat 15 other teams to top the table.

It began in 2017 at the historical home of the Auclum Hill Climb, which was a motorcar course close to Burghfield Common.

Speaking ahead of what was their seventh box cart event, Alex Watts - builder and driver for the team called Better Late than Never - said: "We meet some amazing people, we have a great day out."

He added: "If anyone wants to have a go at this, please do because you'll have so much fun."

His team raised money for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham.

The Boxkart Bash supports Thames Valley Air Ambulance and helps to raise funds for a wide variety of charities.
