Hawaii wildfires: 'This acrid smoke really sticks in your throat'

Wildfires have destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, making it the most deadly fire in the US for a century.

Recovery crews combing through charred homes and vehicles are likely to find 10 to 20 more victims per day, the governor has warned.

It could reportedly take up to 10 days to learn the full death toll.

The BBC's Helena Humphrey reports from a valley in upcountry Maui, which locals told her acted like a chimney for a fireball that ravaged the area.

Hurricane winds fanned the flames, flattening the trees there into tinder before the fires spread to people's homes.
