Watch: Students cut off by tide rescued by RNLI

Three students who were rescued from a beach in East Sussex after getting cut off by the tide said they "thought they were going to die".

An RNLI crew manoeuvred through shallow waters at Flagstaff Point, near Cuckmere Haven, to reach them and gave them lifejackets.

The students were taken back to Newhaven lifeboat station uninjured.

Prashik Sonawane, a master's student, said: "The water was coming towards the bottom of the cliff, with no way for us to get back."

He added: "We were all very anxious – none of us could swim.

"We were freezing, our phones were dead, and we were all shaken."

Steve Hopson, volunteer lifeboat crew member, was on his first rescue mission.

He said: "As we approached the beach, it was a relief to see them on their feet. "Thankfully, there were no injuries, and they were able to board the inflatable lifeboat with relative ease."
