Ralph Ottey: 'I'll always remember Churchill's VE Day speech'

Ralph Ottey was one of thousands from across the British Empire to answer the call to help with the war effort.

He travelled from Jamaica to take up arms and recalls a "wonderful" few years serving in the Army.

On VE Day, Ralph was serving at RAF Woodhall Spa, the home of the famous 617 Squadron - The Dambusters.

"I'll always remember that speech, because it showed the greatness of Churchill."

We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.

The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
