National Highways said diversions were in place due to the incident

The M1 in South Yorkshire was shut for several hours in both directions on Thursday due to a police incident.

The road was closed to traffic between junctions 36 and 37 to allow emergency services to respond, according to South Yorkshire Police.

At the height of the incident on Thursday afternoon, traffic was being diverted between Hoyland and Barnsley, National Highways said.

The motorway was re-opened in both directions at about 19:30 BST.
