A driver who used a laser jammer to illegally block signals from road safety cameras has been jailed.

Michael Twizell, 58, used the device on the front of his BMW 3 Series to interfere with camera equipment, police said.

Twizell, of Low Road, Dewsbury, was driving on the A658 near Harrogate when he passed a camera van last February.

He was jailed for three months at York Crown Court after he admitted perverting the course of justice.

The camera operator had detected an error code, and North Yorkshire Police launched an investigation.

Twizell had put the jammer on the front of his vehicle to interfere with police camera equipment, according to the force.

After the hearing, Traffic Constable Andy Forth said: "To use a device capable of interfering with police speed measurement is clearly as shown today a very serious matter."

"I advise anyone who may have a similar device fitted to their vehicle to think about the consequences, and strongly recommend they remove it to avoid a future prosecution," he added.

Twizell was also fined £1,500.
