Ormiston Endeavour Academy was locked down on Friday as a precautionary measure

A 14-year-old boy has been charged after a school was put in lockdown due to an incident involving a knife.

Police were called to Ormiston Endeavour Academy in Defoe Road, Ipswich, on Friday at 07:57 BST, and they arrested the teenager in the field at 09:30.

A knife was seized at the scene and a spokesperson for the school said the site was locked down as a "precautionary measure" following advice from police.

The teenager was charged with possession of a bladed article on school premises and with threats to kill and appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

"This is considered an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk at this time and no injuries were suffered," Suffolk Police said.

A spokesperson for the school said the authorities were "alerted immediately" after reports of the teenager on the field.

"The police were rapidly on site to deal with the individual who was escorted off the premises and they are now investigating the matter," they said.

"We would like to thank all our students and staff for following our robust safety procedures, and for the support received from our school community."

The teenager was released on bail and was next due to appear at the same court on 29 May.
