A man has been arrested after more than 20 puppies were abandoned.

Three batches of puppies were dumped in north Cumbria last month, the county's police force said, adding three of the dogs did not survive.

A 25-year-old from Brampton in Cumbria was arrested in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, on Monday on suspicion of three incidents of causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals.

He has been released under investigation, officers said.

The surviving puppies have since received treatment and have been rehomed, Cumbria Police added.

A search was also carried out at an address in Canonbie.
