Man who died after police stop was 'much loved'

The family of a man who was found unresponsive and later died in hospital, hours after being stopped by police, have said he was "much loved".

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said its officers had conducted a stop and search on Stephen Friday at 01:30 BST in Bicester, Oxfordshire, on Tuesday.

He was later found in Banbury Road in the town at 04:08 and was taken to hospital. The force said the death was being investigated as unexplained but not suspicious.

In a statement, Mr Friday's family said: "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of our dearly loved son Stephen."

"He was also a much loved brother, father, nephew and cousin," the family said.

"His loss will be greatly felt by the family and we ask that our privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time."

Earlier in the week, TVP confirmed it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct - which is mandatory for such incidents.
