A man has sustained what the police have described as "significant injuries" following a serious assault in Strabane, County Tyrone.

Paramedics attended the scene in the Beechmount Village area of the town following a 999 call at 03:50 GMT on Monday.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) has said one person was treated at the scene by an emergency crew before being taken to Altnagelvin hospital in Londonderry.

The police have confirmed that a 31-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.
