More than 300 arrests in drink and drug driving op

Police bodycam footage shows officers making arrests during the drink-drive crackdown

More than 300 people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving offences during a month long enforcement campaign in Kent.

Arrests included a driver from Gillingham whose car had collided with railings in Chatham and another whose vehicle was seen swerving on the A2 near Gravesend.

Kent Police said the A2 driver failed a roadside drug test and was also found to be in possession of cannabis. Both men were later bailed pending further enquiries.

Although the arrests, made between 1 December and 1 January, were made as part of a national initiative, Ch Insp Craig West said tackling drink and drug driving was "a year-round commitment" for Kent Police.

In total, 316 arrests were made for a variety of different reasons.

Ch Insp West said: "Some were surprised at being over the limit, others were still drunk from the night before and there were also those who could barely stand and were quite clearly in no fit state to control a motor vehicle.

"The one thing they all had in common was that they should not have been driving and by doing so they were putting themselves and other road users in danger."
