Man hits woman's head against lamp post

A man repeatedly punched a woman before hitting her head against a lamp post, police have said.

A 41-year-old woman was walking along Raby Square in Hartlepool, towards Chatham Gardens, on Friday at about 14:30 BST when she was approached by a man wearing a light blue jacket and dark blue bottoms, Cleveland Police said.

Following a short conversation, he punched her in the face multiple times then hit her head against a lamp post, a force spokeswoman said.

The woman managed to get away and reach safety at a nearby property, from where she was taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The man was described as 6ft (1.8m) tall with short black hair, police said.

Officers in Hartlepool asked anyone who witnessed the assault, or who has any information, to get in touch.

Anyone nearby is also being asked to check their CCTV or dash cam footage.
