Arrest after reports of man with knife

Police have arrested a 44-year-old man after receiving reports of a man with a knife.

The West Midlands force said it was called to North Avenue in Coventry at 11:00 BST on Wednesday.

It said officers detained the man under the mental health act and that he had been taken to hospital for further assessment.

Extra police officers would be in the area on Wednesday evening to provide reassurance, it added.

The nearby Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School said it went into lockdown during the incident, but the police said the man did not enter school property.

A spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Academy said parents were informed and the lockdown was "a precautionary measure on advice from the police".

It praised its staff for their handling of the situation and the pupils for their "understanding and maturity".

It added: "While there was no danger to staff or pupils at any stage, we followed our protocols to ensure the safety and security of everyone on site."
