More than 120 streets missed for bin collections
Concerns have been raised with a city council after more than 120 streets were missed for bin collections during the first full week of 2025.
Labour-led Derby City Council explained that "heavier rounds following Christmas", vehicle breakdowns and the cold weather were reasons why dozens of streets were missed for blue recycling and black waste bins.
Some Conservative councillors were not impressed with the reasons given, after the council's refuse team's message to members in Chaddesden was shared on social media.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said additional crews were running this week to catch up on any outstanding work.
Missed bin collections were a frequent problem throughout 2024 for Derby residents, the LDRS added.
In August, it was reported that almost 230 city streets were missed.
A similar incident in April saw about 200 missed streets, which was blamed on "unforeseen staffing issues". That was mainly for brown bin collections.
'Factors beyond control'
Chaddesden East councillors Jerry Pearce and John Wright are demanding answers.
In a statement, they said: "We are mostly concerned that vehicles weren't 100% ready for the bin collections... as they knew that it would be a larger amount being collected.
"We will be taking this up with the department."
A spokesperson for the council said the authority had now cleared "all but 15 outstanding streets on blue bin rounds".
"Residents are able to present up to three extra bags of general waste and many also present extra blue bin waste," they said.
"This all adds up and fills our vehicles quicker, meaning more visits and longer wait times at the tip. Factors beyond our control have also created some issues, including vehicle breakdowns and defects as a result of the weather, which has also affected the speed with which our crews can get around the city safely and collect waste."
