Some residents evacuated after a sinkhole opened up on their street will soon be able to return home.

A void emerged on Nant Morlais in Pant, Merthyr Tydfil, on Sunday that was said to be 9-12m (30-40ft) deep and five metres (16ft) wide.

There were worries householders might not be able to return until after Christmas.

Merthyr council said it had completed inspections and that no further problems had been found.

"The sinkhole hasn’t increased in size since yesterday," a spokesman said.

"We are liaising with utility companies to establish temporary supplies to enable some residents to return home."
