A safety warning has been issued after a group of children were seen playing near an icy lake.

Cleethorpes Coastguard said four young males were seen by a member of the public near the lake at Cleethorpes Country Park on Saturday, with one of the males being encouraged to walk on the ice.

Freezing temperatures over the weekend meant lakes and other bodies of water in the area froze over.

In a post on Facebook, the coastguard said: "You just don't know how thick the ice is, and you could very easily end up falling through the ice."

It added: "When we receive information/photos of children doing potentially dangerous activities, it concerns us.

"Have fun, but stay off the ice around bodies of water.

"The water in these conditions does not need to be very deep to get you into difficulty."

The coastguard said it attended a call before Christmas after a child fell through the ice, prompting a large-scale response.

It urged people to call 999 if they spot any coastal emergencies.

Temperatures in Cleethorpes are predicted to be warmer this week, with highs of 10C on Tuesday, according to BBC Weather.
