Part of a coffee shop was left underwater after apparently being deliberately flooded by someone who blocked up a sink before running the taps, staff have said.

A corridor at the Costa Coffee, in Haxby, York, was under an inch of water on Tuesday afternoon following the incident, according to a social media post by a staff member.

Posting in a Haxby community group on Facebook, Lauren Anderson said it was believed someone had gone into the shop toilet shortly before 15:30 BST and then "blocked the sink plug with tissue and left the taps running".

Staff spent three hours clearing the water which had caused "minimal damage" to floors in the corridor leading to the toilet, she said.

According to Ms Anderson's post, a review of CCTV footage showed two girls aged about 12 or 13 had gone down the corridor about 20 minutes before the flood was reported by a customer.

The girls had then left the premises "shortly afterwards", she said.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed the incident is under investigation.
