A man has been jailed for raping a woman at his home in Newark.

Nottinghamshire Police said Francesco Aria's victim escaped his address after he assaulted her and reported him.

The force said Aria denied rape, claiming to have had consensual sex with her, but he was found guilty after a trial last month.

The 30-year-old was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday.

The victim reported the rape in August 2021 and had waited for four years to see Aria convicted, police said.

Det Con Donna Elliott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Aria's actions were appalling, and unsurprisingly this incident has had a very considerable impact on the victim's life.

"She has shown enormous courage in coming forward and immense patience as this trial reached the courts."

Aria, of Mill Gate, Newark, was given an indefinite restraining order to prevent him from contacting the victim.

He was also added to the sex offenders register for life.
