A major tyre manufacturer has announced it will relocate its UK head office in Staffordshire later this month.

Michelin is moving its base to Keele University's campus and said the relocation would help it be more sustainable and create a better workplace for staff.

Staff at its retreading factory and its logistics and training centre will remain at its current headquarters in the Campbell Road manufacturing site in Stoke-on-Trent.

Offices have been converted within the university's Science and Innovation Park to accommodate the employees moving there from Michelin's Riverside complex.

John Howe, managing director of Michelin in the UK and Ireland, said the end of its lease on existing premises created a "natural opportunity" to look at alternatives.

"This is a great opportunity to provide collaborative and dynamic workspace experiences that are fit for today's and future talents," he said.

Last year, the Michelin Group said it was considering moving 39 customer contact centre roles to Poland by September.

The Keele site will provide the company with 49 electric vehicle charging points as well as cycle stores and shower facilities for staff who commute by bike.

The site also generates wind and solar energy, and the new office block has been fitted out with meeting rooms, collaborative working areas and quiet spaces.

Staff will also be able to access a range of facilities on-site, including fitness, retail and dining.

Professor Trevor McMillan, vice-chancellor of Keele University, said he was delighted Michelin had chosen to relocate its head office there.

"Our discussions have already uncovered common interests, particularly around sustainability and social inclusion, which we hope to build on," he said.
