Man charged with being member of Islamic State

Shazad Ali, from Newport, Gwent has been charged with four terrorism-related offences

A 20-year-old man from Newport has been charged with being a member of the Islamic State group (IS).

Shazad Ali has also been charged with inviting support for the organisation, and encouraging and supporting terrorist acts.

The charges were brought by detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing Wales on Wednesday and Ali appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on 2 May.
