Banned driver rammed police cars in escape attempt

A man already banned from driving rammed several police cars and injured three officers as he tried to flee.

Mohammed Shaheeb appeared to be asleep behind the wheel of a parked car when he was spotted in Montpellier St, Birmingham, at 09:30 GMT on 5 October.

When officers tried to wake him, he reversed and tried to ram his way out of the road, crashing into three police vehicles and a car owned by a member of the public, West Midlands Police said.

The 39-year-old, of Roma Road, Birmingham, admitted dangerous driving, going equipped for theft and a number of driving offences at Birmingham Crown Court and was jailed for 22 months.

Shaheeb, who was previously banned from driving until March 2027, was also given a five-year driving ban.

Following his sentencing on Thursday, West Midlands Police released a video of the moment he tried to escape.

The force said when officers approached Shaheeb he drove towards Moseley Road but was blocked by two other officers in another vehicle.

A Taser was aimed at him and as he tried to get away, he crashed into the four cars and an officer had to jump out of the way.

Police said there was tape partly covering his number plate and they found two sets of pliers, false registration plates and scissors in the car.

Ch Insp Colin Gallier said it was "absolutely appalling driving from a man who appeared to want to stop at nothing to get away".

He said Shaheeb had "an extensive history of vehicle crime", adding: "The fake number plates and pliers in his car at the time suggest he was out committing crime" at the time of the arrest.
