Labour MP Michelle Scrogham wants to protect the branch from closure

An MP has called on the public to send the "strongest possible message" they want to save their local post office.

Barrow and Furness' Michelle Scrogham has launched a petition to protect the branch at Furness House in Dalton Road.

The site is one of 115 branches the Post Office is considering transferring to retail partners, postmasters or potentially closing.

Labour's Scrogham said: "People depend on these branches for services, and they are an important part of the high street offer."

She said there was a "palpable sense of anger" in the community when it emerged the branch was at risk, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"I would urge those people who want to see it saved to join this campaign," she said.

It comes after members of Westmorland and Furness Council approved a motion calling on the Post Office to halt proposals, which could also lead to the closure of the Kendal branch.

The government-owned Post Office has 11,500 branches across the UK, most of which are franchises.

Last year, it revealed it was conducting a strategic review of the 115 sites it directly owns, which employ about 1,000 people and are loss-making.

These are usually found in town and city centres and staffed by Post Office employees.

The review follows challenges it has faced including fewer people sending letters and stiff competition from rival parcel operators like Evri.
