Four men have been arrested after a man was attacked on a city centre night out.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 30s, was visiting Liverpool when he was hit in the face near a branch of McDonalds at about 19:35 GMT on Friday, Merseyside Police said.

He collapsed and was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.

Four men, believed to be known to him, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

They are a 19-year-old man from Redditch, two men, aged 26 and 37, from Birmingham, and a 31-year-old from Hollywood, Worcestershire.

Police have appealed for information.

Det Ch Insp Paul Parry said: "This assault has left the victim in a critical condition during what should have been an enjoyable night out in Liverpool.

"People should be able to visit our city centre without any fear of being a victim of - or even witnessing - an incident such as this."
