A lorry driver has died in a "tragic incident" at a warehouse in Avonmouth, Bristol.

B&M, which runs more than 700 stores across the UK, confirmed that a driver for the company had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

An investigation into the incident has been opened by the Health and Safety Executive, a spokesperson for which has confirmed they are in touch with Avon and Somerset Police.

The South West Ambulance Service told the BBC they had been called at 04:37 GMT on Sunday, and sent two double-crewed ambulances and a hazardous area response team to the scene.

'Incredibly difficult'

A B&M spokesperson said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"At this moment, we are working closely with the relevant authorities and conducting a thorough investigation to establish all the facts surrounding this tragic incident.

"In the meantime, our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family and loved ones affected during this incredibly difficult time."

It is reported that the incident is believed to have taken place in the car park of the DHL warehouse in Avonmouth.

A spokesperson for the company said: "We are aware of the death of a B&M colleague. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their family."
