Tunnel works to close Tyne and Wear Metro lines
Getty ImagesPeople are being urged to plan their journeys ahead of "vital works" on the Tyne and Wear Metro which will result in both lines being closed.
Train operator Nexus will be replacing overhead line equipment in the tunnel underneath Newcastle city centre on 18 May.
The work will be carried out between Monument and Haymarket but will mean services will not run after about 21:00 BST.
"Buses will be replacing trains over a wide area of the Metro system, from South Gosforth to South Shields and South Gosforth to South Hylton," said Nexus's infrastructure director Stuart Clarke.
"The scale of the works we need to undertake is such that we can't pack it all into a night shift and will require the early evening closure," he said.
"We've scheduled these works for a Sunday night so it affects as few customers as possible. We're sorry for any inconvenience it causes."
Mr Clarke said the replacement bus services would run in both directions from Regent Centre interchange, with the 900 running to South Shields and the 901 travelling to South Hylton.
Metro services will continue to operate from South Gosforth to Airport, and to St James via the North Tyneside coast. However, these services may not run to the usual timetable.
Nexus said Metro tickets and passes would be valid on the replacement buses.
The last train times on 18 May will be:
- 20:53 for the South Gosforth to South Hylton service
- 21:08 for South Gosforth to Park Lane
- 21:15 for South Gosforth to South Shields
- 21:52 for South Hylton to South Gosforth
- 21:56 for South Shields to South Gosforth
