Part of the M60 remains shut in both directions after an eight-vehicle pile up, National Highways has said.

The road has been shut for hours after the crash involving three lorries, two cars and a van at about 11:30 BST and is not expected to reopen between junctions one and 25 until 02:30 at the earliest.

A clean-up operation to remove the debris, spilled diesel and several barrels of beer which fell from one of the vehicles is underway, alongside efforts to repair the central reservation.

Drivers have been told to use signposted diversions between junction 25 for the Bredbury Interchange and junction 1 for the Pyramid Roundabout in Stockport.

National Highways said one lorry had driven through the central reservation and hit several lamp posts, while another had shed its load of beer barrels.

The North West Ambulance Service said three people had been taken to hospital for further treatment, while six others were assessed for minor injuries.
