Multi-million pound works completed at water sites

Two schemes worth a combined £6.7m have been completed at Southern Water sites.

The wastewater treatment works at Handcross in West Sussex and East Boldre in Hampshire have benefited from the investment to improve the quality of water leaving the sites, said the water company.

In Handcross, new pressurised multimedia tanks have been installed along with ferric dosing to improve water quality, while at East Boldre sand filters have been installed to add a final polish to the treated water.

The work in West Sussex cost £3m, while the investment in Hampshire was £3.7m.

The work was carried out by contractor GTb, a joint venture between construction group Galliford Try Environment and water management company Binnies UK Ltd, which was part of Southern Water's wider £3bn spending on improving its environmental performance.

Lee McGrattan, project manager for GTb, said: "We're sorry for any disruption these works have caused, but we're looking forward to the benefits they will bring."
