A man suspected of releasing a noxious gas on trams in Greater Manchester has been arrested after several passengers were left feeling "discomfort or dizziness".

He was held after reports of a person in a mask releasing the substance on Metrolink services between Bury and Manchester Victoria over the weekend, police said.

No one affected has reported any serious ill effects, the force added.

The man, aged in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a noxious substance with intent to injure.

The precise nature of the gas has not been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police said an investigation was continuing.

Det Ch Insp Paddy Connell said the tram network was operating as usual and anyone with any concerns should speak to a police officer.

The force also urged anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to get in touch, including any reports of similar incidents.
